Coach Place graduated from Tiffin Columbian in 1970 and competed in Cross Country and Track at Adams State College, winning the first national championship in school history.   He also coached at his alma mater with 1988 & 2008 Olympics men's distance coach Dr. Joe Vigil.   

At Medina, Place won the Ohio Division I state championship in 2007, qualified for the State Meet ten times, won three regional championships, and six district titles. He is a ten-time Medina County Gazette Coach of the Year and a member of three Hall of Fames (Rocky Mountain Athletic Conf., Ohio Association of Track & Cross Country Coaches, Adams State University).    Coach Place also founded the Medina Cross Country Festival in 1992 and has been the director of the event in every year since its inception.

Place is retired from teaching but taught science, math, and language arts during his career.
